Materials: drawing paper, drawing pencils and erasers, sketchbook, pens.
Criteria:
- Look through Pinterest boards (patterning and Pen and Ink). Familiarize yourself with how artists use pattern and pen techniques to create value, depth, intricate patterns, contrast and layering. Also, take notice of their compositions. What makes them visually pleasing?
- Read about composition. How do you create a good composition? See images below and the links here. Composition in art part 1 Composition in art part 2 Composition in art part 3
- Watch the video on drawing textures with value. Take note of how the artist makes the texture look dimensional. Textures with Value Video
- Draw a cylinder and a cube. On these shapes add a texture or pattern that wraps around. Establish a light source. Show value transitions to give shape volume. Do you have a shadow? You should.
- Complete the landscape handout. Add your chosen patterns or textures in areas mapped out AND add value to create contrast. Take photo and post on portfolio. Write a brief description.
- Now, think about what you could create using your knowledge of pen and pattern techniques. Brainstorm 20 ideas. Think about what subject matter would work best with this artform. Here is a list to get you started.
- Farming – could include animals, equipment, barns, etc.
- Still life objects – shoes, hats, sports equipment, etc
- Birds
- Winged Insects
- Food – veggies, fruit, etc
- Architecture
- Landscapes
- Aquatic life
- Churches
- Animals
- Boats
- These are just a few. I want you to develop ideas that include the following – layering, contrast, repetition, depth, balance, value, and interesting ways of breaking up the picture plane.
- Choose your 2 best ideas and take photos or find reference photos to help with design. PASTE reference pictures in sketchbook.
- For EACH IDEA idea draw 5 compositional sketches. These are quick, small sketches that are basic line drawings. These are necessary to have to create a successful final piece.
- From the compositional drawings choose best one and draw final sketch. The sketch is a full page drawing where you plan where your patterns and textures will be placed. This is essential component prior to final piece.
