Movement and texture Scratchboard Project
Scratchboard Movement and Texture Project
Media – scratchboard
Concept: Students will create a drawing that utilizes movement, implied movement, textures, values, contrast and use of positive and negative space. Students will show their knowledge of design through composition and arrangement of elements including the subject matter.
Goals: Students will understand how to use scratchboard tools and scratchboard itself. Students will establish a theme for their drawing and understand that it is important to create a piece that shows movement and texture. Students will show design principles through use of media and subject matter.
Requirements:
1. Try to take your own photos for this project. It may be difficult because the subject is open. Because of this your references must be good and you will need at least 5 for each idea.
2. Your drawings MUST be original
3. Have a composition that shows movement, texture, contrast and value.
4. Strong composition and mature subject matter. Use strong design concepts for this. Example – repetition of objects, balance, patterns, composition, will your image emphasize the idea your are trying to portray, use of texture and line, etc.
5. Push your boundaries and think way outside your comfortable box.
Process:
1. Brainstorm 10 ideas that you feel would portray movement properly. Think of all the things that have movement around us. It could be hair blowing in the wind, riding a roller coaster, sailing in the turbulent ocean, or it could be imaginary and you create dragons flying through the air with swirls of clouds and fire. Be creative and do not settle for your first idea.
2. Choose your 2 best ideas and find at minimum 5 references for each idea
3. You MUST have 5 compositional thumbnails for each idea drawn in sketchbook that are 3 x 4 or a comparable size. Please keep in mind that you will need to create a full composition with foreground, middle ground and background. Think of the best way to use space and how to maximize the use of black and white.
4. Choose best idea and create 1 FINAL sketch that incorporates all that you want in composition and what is required to show. .
5. Include all references in your sketchbook (photos, inspiration, notes, etc.). You may use a Pinterest page but you are required to have images printed out so you can see the details.
Thoughts:
Think about how you want to portray movement. How do movement, texture, contrast and composition enhance your idea? Have you included areas of value using lines? Try to think of all different types of patterns and directional lines you can use. Make a list of all things that have movement and what their surroundings are.
Grading:
I will be looking for all the elements stated above. If you are missing a component it will be discussed and will have the opportunity to edit.
