hundertwasser/klimt inspired painting
Objective: Students will create an acrylic painting that depicts a city, park, or garden scene. They will use mainly geometric or organic shapes and bold, harmonious colors. Students will use flat shapes, patterns, and textures of acrylic paint and embellish with gold and silver. They will overlap shapes to create depth. Students will learn about the 20th century Viennese artist’s Klimt and Hundertwasser and their embellished stylized paintings.
Procedure:
1. Show Hundertwasser and Klimt examples from various website.
2. Read article out loud with class from Scholastics magazine
3. Students use Discovering Drawing book to define terms used for this project;
composition, patterns, embellished, stylized, abstracted, organic shapes, color harmony, texture. Review definitions.
4. Students will research both artists and write a paragraph on each. Include information about their style.
5. Find/take reference photos of landscapes, cityscapes, gardens, trees, parks, etc. You should have 4 reference photos for 2 different ideas that will work for project.
6. Draw 6 compositional sketches. 3 of the sketches should have a radiating central point, patterns, repetition and framed with a border. The other 3 should have overlapping layers, patterns, and repetition
7. Create two full page color sketches (one for each type) using colored pencils to create an image similar to those by Hundertwasser and Klimt.
