Pop Art Food Sculptures - In clay
Objective: To create a three dimensional piece of artwork. Students will become technically proficient in the use of clay, and understand clay terminology. They will use different media and techniques expressively. They will understand that visual arts have a history, purpose, and function in all cultures. The students will invent original, personal imagery without copying to create a food sculpture based on the Pop Art style.

Procedure:
- Introduce the art period (Pop Art) show examples of pop artists.
- Pop Art : A form of art that depicts objects or scenes from everyday life and employs techniques of commercial art and popular illustration
- Artists Used Satire. Artists sometimes enlarged objects to gigantic proportions. These objects reflected mass culture and consumerism.
- Subjects are often easily recognizable and reflect popular items, people or ideas from American Culture: Food, Brand Names and products, Iconic Figures, Common, everyday household items, Current events
- Stylistically pop art can be defined as: Simple, crisp lines, Oversized images or objects, Often reflects and copies the styles seen in the media, Collages of popular images, Bright Colors, Some work re-creates the same subject in several pieces or within the same piece.
- Research Warhol, Lichtenstein and Oldenburg. Write a paragraph on each that explains their artform.

- Define the terms on the clay worksheet here
- View examples from students in previous classes on digital portfolios and on pinterest (food sculptures).
- Brainstorm 20 ideas as to what food you would like to create. You must think creatively and pull together a whole scene. This means you will not just make one item.
- Choose best 2 ideas and discuss with teacher.
- Gather reference pictures for both ideas. There should be at least 5 references per idea.
- Create compositional sketches for each idea that show all views of the food (front, sides, and back = 4).
- Discuss techniques in clay, coil, slab, pinch, and wheel
- Students will create a sculpture representing food in the Pop Art style.
- Give demo on each technique
- Discuss safety and use of tools
- Sculpt, finish, fire, and glaze
