Art 2 Printmaking Project
Prehistoric Era/Architectural and Natural wonders of the world

Objective: Students will expand on knowledge of the printmaking process.  They will be introduced to the Prehistoric Era and Natural and Architectural wonders of the world through research; Students will become familiar with researching subject online; Students will use their knowledge of Printmaking to create a successful drawing that represents subject matter; Students will be encouraged to utilize new techniques in printmaking.

Assignment:
Research the Prehistoric Era and/or Natural and Architectural wonders of the world for subject matter that will create a successful drawing for printmaking.
  1. Choose 2 topics from categories listed and research facts online.  Write down information that is important in sketchbook
  2. Write at least 2 paragraphs on each chosen subject
  3. Find at least 4 references for each idea. You should have various images to assist you in creating a complete composition. You will have to incorporate foreground, middle ground and background
  4. Create 2 different successful drawings for each subject that are 6”x12”. The area we will be carving is exactly 6x12. If your drawings are this size you will not have a problem transferring image to print.
  5. Each drawing should utilize a great deal of texture and line. Printmaking is all about use of line, texture, space and movement. This is very important to incorporate into your drawing.
  6. Use knowledge of the Art elements and principles for a unified composition.
 
Inspiration ideas: Here are some examples you can use as guides for subject matter in both of these categories. There are many more sub-categories that can be researched. Do not limit yourself to the ones below…..

Prehistoric Era (
2,000,000 years B.C. to about 6000 B.C)
  1. The stone age

  5. Cretaceous Period

Natural Wonders of the World
  1. Great Pyramid of Giza
  2. Statue of Zeus at Olympia
  3. The Great Wall of China

  6. Great Barrier Reef
  7. Northern Lights
Architectural wonders of the world
  1. Brooklyn Bridge
  2. Chartres Cathedral
  3. Hagia Sophia
  4. Statue of Liberty
  5. Taj Mahal
  6. Parthenon
Printing Process: (Relief Print)
  1. Break final sketch down in to color areas (use 4 colors, plus black)
  2. Color design using colored pencils
  3. Trace design and transfer to linoleum, redraw design on linoleum with sharpie
  4. Using the gouge tool cut out area of design you want to remain the color of the paper.
  5. Print the lightest color first (we will make a series of 8) ex: yellow
  6.  Cut out the areas you wish to remain the lightest color
  7. Print the 2nd lightest color ex: blue
  8. Cut out the areas you wish to remain the 2nd lightest color
  9. Print the third lightest color ex: brown
  10. Cut out the areas of the design you wish to remain the 3rd lightest color
  11.  Print black
 
* Remember at each stage, you must print 6 times! You cannot go back to an earlier step in the reduction print once you carve.
* Make sure your prints are registered, fully inked, and labeled properly.
